Caroline Bouyer x LMS

Chez Caroline au Pré-Saint-Gervais ; au mur, le modèle Ménilmontant

The SOURCES wallpaper is part of a limited edition wallpaper series in two colourways created by Le Monde Sauvage and Caroline Bouyer. Caroline is an artist specialising in ‘gravure’ prints based in Ménilmontant in Paris. When Béatrice first paid a visit to her workshop she had no idea where their meeting would lead...

An inspired partnership

When Béatrice first saw Caroline Bouyer’s work, she fell in love with a series of gravure prints depicting the area surrounding Paris.

Whilst the city was her primary source of inspiration, Caroline is increasingly drawn to nature in a variety of forms. With the aid of her memory and her sketchbook, her walks in the wild contribute to the imaginary paths to be found in her current work.

Multiple similarities exist between the creative processes of Caroline and that of Le Monde Sauvage: At the end of an exploratory path something is created and a link formed. The link between these two distinct worlds takes shape in the creation of a wallpaper. It was not without a certain technical challenge however. How to ensure that the fine lines of Carolines gravure would work on the LMS signature batik, signature Wallpaper which involves printing a pattern on wood (block print) onto sheets of rice paper? Sometimes constraint provides creative solutions and this collaboration was no exception. The lines on the paper are as beautiful as the spaces in between in which we see a secondary, new meaning.

Dessin de la gravure d’origine

Limited edition

SOURCES draws its inspiration from both the mineral and plant worlds. We can make out a stream that meanders through the rocks, pebbles and trees. The background is lighter than the pattern and it is in the contrasting spaces in between that we can see a river winding and flowing. Step by step the engraving with which the project began takes on colour. Sources exists in two colourways: the first a greyish violet and the second a greenish blue, a colour that Caroline particularly loves. The first « Ménilmontant », is named after the spring that flowed from the Paris hill in the direction of the west of the city. The second, « Marais », is named after the city’s ancient marshland.
