Audrey Chamoret Devergne

 

Audrey, can you introduce yourself?

I’m from Paris, an entrepreneur and a mother. I like beauty, places, travel, life, people! I have always been an observer, trying to make sense of the world from an aesthetic point of view.

Your interior decorating mantra?

I am a conservationist! I like to preserve the spirit of a place so that my work becomes part of the ongoing story rather than a rupture or a break in the chain.

What do you think of the concept of good taste?

 Je suis du genre à voir du beau partout mais le désordre me fait mal aux yeux !

If you were a room in the house?

The entrance hall. It sets the tone, welcomes you in and provides a foretaste of the rest of the house.

 

The top 3 things on your bucket list

- To give, to love and, as a general rule, to be generous.

- To believe in my dreams and find a way to turn them into reality.

- To travel in order to grow, to meet new, different people and to maintain a sense of wonder.

 
Gustav Klimt
If you were an artist?

I adore Klimt and in particular the way he mixed colour and gold in a very art deco way. I find his work deeply decorative and architectural.

 

Yourdream project?

To completely restore and decorate a 19th century château.
 
Your current obsession?

Art deco. It’s not so much a current as an on going obsession!

 
 

 

Audrey’s tips

- Mixing styles for a completely personal finish.

- To hunt out antique finds for a more authentic feel.

- To play with colour (and patina preferably) because it makes us happy.

 

Can you describe your career path?

I have two degrees, one in French literature and the other in business law. At the age of 30 I decided on a career in interior design after an initial foray into the law. I created Atelier Devergne in 2017 and very quickly had so many projects that I employed one, then two, and now five people! So today I head up a wonderful team working (for now) with mainly private clients on increasingly large-scale and beautiful projects. I say ‘for now’ as I would love to do some commercial projects too.

 
How would you define your style?

 

Warm, quite eclectic, comfortable, colourful and soothing at the same time. I have a visceral need to show the hand of time in the places and objects I work on. I like to read and tell a story.

 
Your favourite type of building or space?

One that has remained unchanged for many, many years, definitely!

 
How do you create definition

 

WIth rugs – moldavian ones in particular – and cushions. For me, textiles of all types are the cherry on the cake.

 

How do you create cadence and rhythm in a design scheme?


Through colour, contrast, by placing different textures side by side, and by creating perspectives

 
Light, dark or chiaroscuro?

Chiaroscuro because you need both light and dark to create a sense of balance. I am a great believer in the notion of balance in decorating.

 
Muted palettes or an explosion of colour?

 

Again, I would say a mix of the two. I adore colour but it mustn’t be allowed to dominate and create a sense of imbalance. There is a place for everything and colour mustn’t take over a space.

 
Indispensable accessories

curtains, rugs, cushions and all the details that really ‘finish’ an interior. So, a lamp, small objects, a vase filled with dried flowers…

 

 
Green house?

Nature should be brought into an interior. Plants and flowers are vital when it comes to creating a cosy, serene cocoon where you can feel comfortable.

 
Your top decorating tip?

Mix different styles in a way that surprises and is different to what one would expect.
