In conversation with Julie Rogier

“An interior that reflects each of my clients”: Julie Rogier’s credo resonates perfectly with Le Monde Sauvage’s motto. Founder of Studio Dallas, Julie takes a personalised, even personal approach to her projects. She places the ‘unique energy’ of each of her clients at the heart of her vision, creating interiors that are close to them and fully reflect who they are.

Julie, could you introduce yourself?

I have been an interior designer and decorator in Paris for almost 10 years. I had a first career in communications, then went back to school. I really wanted to work on more concrete subjects that were directly related to people. I certainly get my taste for comfort and interior design from my Nordic origins.

Your interior design mantra?

Prioritise what you see when you enter a space, when you enter each room... what happens when you open a door, what the perspectives are like... This changes the feeling you get from a space and allows you to create a story that unfolds as you discover more.

What do you think of the concept of good taste?

I think it’s impossible to define. When starting a project, I like to ask clients what they have in mind, what inspires them, and try to understand what makes sense to them in their interior. Above all, I like to personalise living spaces and I don’t have any preconceptions about styles, so we can do away with ‘good taste’!

If you could be a room in the house, which would it be?

Without hesitation, the bathroom. My personal element is water, and I find it very rejuvenating. I often have my best ideas at that moment; it’s almost meditative.

The top 3 things on your bucket list?

● I really want to visit Hawaii and Brazil, see Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture, as many modernist houses as possible, and go to villages where the roads are sandy, like in Jericoacoara.

● I would like to live in a mid-century house by the sea.

● And also design and create a stained glass window.

If you were an artist?

I am a huge fan of Antoni Gaudí’s architectural achievements. For me, he went far beyond architecture; his work was ahead of its time and so inspiring, whether in terms of volume, abundance or the symbolism of decorative elements.

Your dream project?

Working on a top-floor flat with a landscaped terrace (like the one that belonged to cartoonist Gossini) or a hotel with a spa. I would love to come up with the entire concept for a living space and bring it to life in every detail, working with graphic designers, craftsmen, artists... I already have my dream team in mind!

A current obsession?

Right now, I’m fascinated by Jean Lurçat’s tapestries. I can’t wait to visit his house and studio in Paris! I also love Jean Gerbino’s vases and jugs, and striped bed linen.

A step towards a brighter future?

Continue working on customising projects so that residents feel so comfortable that they have no desire or need to change anything. Use more environmentally friendly materials, such as cork flooring, for example.

Studio Dallas

The name comes from my initials, J.R. In the 1980s, when I gave out my initials, the reference to J.R. Ewing from the series Dallas would come up in conversation. Besides, I’ve always been a big fan of the United States.

What inspires you?

I really enjoy observing details, whether it’s architecture while travelling or, closer to home, going to hotels just to have a cup of tea, visiting exhibitions, architects’ houses, or analysing street furniture. When researching vintage objects and furniture on www.selency.fr, for example, I discover designers and can spend hours doing so!

“Do not make the customer disappear into their interior.”

It’s all about creating an interior that reflects each of my clients’ personalities. If you follow trends to the letter, you may not necessarily create a lasting interior that you will feel comfortable in for a long time, and sometimes it can even prevent you from daring to create an interior that suits you.

Unique energy

I like to approach projects by going beyond aesthetics and functionality, i.e. by using personal elements. We all have a unique energy, influenced by our personality but also by the element that corresponds to us: wood, fire, earth, metal or water. I can determine this by talking to clients about their tastes or even their date of birth. With this approach, I can suggest colours and materials suited to each person’s preferences and thus create interiors that are closer to them.

Your favorite playground?

In its original state! I love seeing spectacular transformations with a result that gives the final impression that the place may have always been that way.

Bring in the material

I love working with and mixing materials. Combining a rather raw cork floor, for example, with brass details, or marble that contrasts with hand-finished concrete created by craftsmen... I enjoy discussing custom-made elements with carpenters, talking about the different types of wood and stains that could be used for a project. In fact, I collect samples from each project like relics ;)

What does Le Monde Sauvage inspire in you?

Le Monde Sauvage inspires me with a timeless journey through textures and patinated hues, each with its own unique color palette. I love the “living” quality of the materials used: the velvet of the cushions and the sheen of the bedspreads, the silk, the linen tones, and the raw effect of the wallpaper range. Not forgetting the bolder, more personalized collections, like the Bestiaire cushion series, especially those inspired by the marine world. The world of Le Monde Sauvage can be integrated into all types of interiors and styles, from country houses to ultra-contemporary apartments.
