In conversation with Ingrid Prudhomme

A particular flair for colour: unbound by rules and trends, Ingrid Prudhomme wields the colour palette with great skill. In her view, the choice of colours is closely linked to her clients’ sensibilities, which she seeks to capture in her designs. For her, interior design is a reflection of personality.

Ingrid, can you introduce yourself?

My name is Ingrid Prudhomme, I am an interior designer. After fifteen years as an art director in digital design, I felt the need to leave a world that was too abstract and return to something more tangible and sensory. I trained at the École Boulle in late 2019 and founded Studio Blanche Paris in 2020.

Your decorating mantra?

First and foremost, I like to understand my clients’ sensibilities – what moves them, and what they want to feel when they’re at home. Then, I weave a common thread through the entire interior. Each room can have its own personality, but there’s always a connection: a colour, a material, a pattern. That’s what allows me to create spaces that are harmonious, vibrant and cohesive, without ever feeling rigid.

What do you think of the concept of good taste?

Good taste? I’ve always found that a bit suspect. I don’t believe in universal good taste. Who are we to decide? I believe much more in emotion, boldness and sincerity. A place may be imperfect, excessive or bewildering, but if it feels right to those who live there, then it’s a success. And so what if it doesn’t please everyone? And I’m always a bit wary of those who claim to hold the truth when it comes to taste.

If you were a room in the house?

The library: a cosy haven where I can escape, let my imagination run wild… and, above all, escape boredom, which terrifies me.

The top 3 on your bucket list ?

✦ My ultimate dream: to design my own tableware collection.

✦ To finally have the time to learn to play the piano – even if I’m not very good at it, as long as I put my heart into it.

✦ To develop a collection of textile prints, like a playground with no rules.

If you were an artist?

Falaises de craie sur l’île de Rügen by Caspar David Friedrich is one of my favourite paintings: a work of captivating beauty and poetry. All his paintings are deeply sensitive, vibrant, almost silent – they touch on something very intimate.

Your dream project?

Imagine a restaurant or a hotel: places where a story unfolds from floor to ceiling, where every detail matters, and where people come as much for the experience as for the desire to linger a little too long.

Your current obsession?

La lave émaillée : pour sa profondeur, ses nuances et la poésie artisanale de son rendu. J’aime ses petites imperfections, ces accidents de parcours qui la rendent vivante.

Your commitment to a better tomorrow?

Apprendre à lever le pied et profiter davantage de mes enfants qui grandissent trop vite – et essayer, au passage, de ne pas toujours vouloir tout contrôler.

Ingrid’s world

“I particularly enjoy creating cosy, intimate atmospheres. An interior says a lot about the people who live there.”

Studio Blanche: What lies behind this name?

Blanche is my great-grandmother’s first name. I never met her, but I grew up listening to her stories. She loved the piano, the theatre, fashion and humour – quite a character! Her portrait hung in the family living room and fascinated me for a long time, almost like a character from a novel. This name is like a legacy, a passing on of sensitivity and a certain taste for contrasts.

Colour range

Colour sets the tone; it sets the ‘mood’ of a room. You can go for a head-to-toe look or use it in small touches; there are no hard and fast rules – it all depends on the clients’ personalities and tastes. My role is precisely to listen to them, understand them and translate their emotions into a palette that is both accurate and cohesive.

Boudoir atmosphere

I particularly enjoy creating intimate atmospheres. An interior says a great deal about those who live there. Working on it requires real care and a great deal of sensitivity. It often involves touching on something very personal. My work consists of creating spaces that feel good, that are reassuring, that envelop you – almost like an extension of your inner self.

Graphic heritage

My background as an art director in graphic design naturally influences my work. I’ve always loved patterns and compositions. I approach interiors much like images to be constructed: considering volumes, balance, materials and rhythms. There’s a clear link to my former profession, even if it now finds expression in a more sensitive and tangible way.

Modulate interior space

The way spaces are arranged is a stage of the process that I particularly enjoy. I love telling a story, imagining a journey, and putting myself in my clients’ shoes. There’s a rhythm, a sequence of events, and different viewpoints. We seek the right balance between comfort, practicality and surprise. Then comes the moment to translate all this into images, to stage the spaces, to script them… and to invite the clients to become the protagonists. It really is one of my favourite stages.

Rem’s Coffee Shop

This is a project that means a great deal to me, and I was fortunate enough to oversee it from start to finish – from the initial design through to the final build, including the décor and the design of the furniture, particularly the tables and seating. Working with ERP software is a game-changer. There’s less personal involvement, but often greater creative freedom. The space must not only be functional; it must inspire. I absolutely loved this experience.

Celebrating the passage of time

For me, it’s about respecting the spirit of a place whilst bringing it into the present, without ever erasing it: preserving, renovating, enhancing, hunting for treasures, reinterpreting, inventing.
